IHCL CONTINUES ENDEAVOUR TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT WITH 35 PER CENT OF ITS HOTELS IN SOUTH INDIA UTILIZING ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES
MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 15, 2022: With a focus on promoting Environmental Stewardship under its ESG+ framework of Paathya to drive its sustainability and social impact measures, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, announced that 35 per cent of its hotels in South India have succeeded in fulfilling their energy requirements from renewable sources. This is in line with IHCL’s commitment towards energy conservation and long term goal of deriving no less than 50 per cent of energy across all hotels from renewable sources by 2030.
Speaking on this occasion, Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President, Human Resources, IHCL, stated, “At IHCL, sustainability lies at the heart of all that we do, and we are constantly driven to make a positive impact wherever we conduct business. Our Paathya framework is a testament to our unwavering commitment towards building a future that is healthy and sustainable for all, and our endeavour to significantly reduce our carbon footprint is a much-required step towards this. Our South India hotels deriving 38 per cent of their energy consumption from renewable sources provides further impetus for us to achieve our 2030 goals.”
With the knowledge that the adoption of sustainable initiatives begins with the very design of a hotel, IHCL has undertaken a number of measures to ensure the utilization of climate-responsive elements such as glass, insulation, ventilation, and daylighting, which results in the reduction of air conditioning requirements by up to 30 per cent. The company is also using energy-efficient technology for cooling, hot water, and lighting such as solar hot water systems, heat pumps and recovering waste heat for hot water to reduce energy consumption by over 60 per cent.
As a leader in the hospitality industry, IHCL has always catered to stringent sustainability protocols. Currently, 30 per cent of IHCL hotels in India and 35 per cent of the hotels in South India portfolio are using energy from renewable resource. Be it the iconic Taj West End in Bengaluru, which has successfully harnessed 97 per cent of its energy consumption from renewable sources, or Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, Coorg, which has significantly increased utilization of green sources of energy to 93 per cent from its earlier 27 per cent, and Vivanta Whitefield in Bengaluru with 96 per cent renewable energy used; the collaborative efforts across all hotels are driving IHCL to widen its renewable energy reserve usage.
With a long term vision of driving responsible tourism, IHCL has announced its sustainability commitments for the year 2030 under Paathya. IHCL will continue to pioneer sustainable practices in its pursuit towards excellence and creating benchmark in the tourism industry.
