A Glorious
History of Firsts

The journey of IHCL began with the visionary spirit of Jamsetji Tata, whose dream of creating a world-class Indian hotel gave rise to The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, in 1903. This iconic hotel not only transformed the city’s skyline but also laid the foundation for India’s modern hospitality industry.

Rooted in the values of the Tata Group, IHCL has consistently pioneered new standards in luxury, innovation, and service. From introducing India’s first licensed bar, jazz music, and electric elevators to opening the doors of royal palaces and exclusive spaces like The Chambers, IHCL has redefined how India—and the world—experiences hospitality.

Over the past 120 years, the Taj has become a symbol of Indian heritage and elegance, hosting global dignitaries, celebrities, and travellers with unmatched warmth and grace. As part of the Tata Group, IHCL continues to lead with purpose, staying true to its legacy of excellence while expanding its presence across continents and cultures.
