MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 27, 2024: On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2024, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible tourism. Through its industry leading ESG+ framework of Paathya, IHCL endeavours to foster inclusion and strengthen local economies.
Emphasizing the importance of tourism in building a more sustainable and inclusive future, Mr. Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at IHCL, said, “Through our ESG+ framework, Paathya, IHCL is committed to contributing to society with an integrated approach that fosters sustainable growth and positive impact. We believe that embedding ESG at the core of our operations will help us navigate today’s challenges and seize the promising opportunities ahead.”
Promoting environmental stewardship, IHCL has embraced renewable energy solutions, harnessing wind and solar power across its hotels. With 43 hotels now operating on 100% green energy, the portfolio currently derives 37% of its electrical energy from renewable sources, with a target of reaching 50% by 2030. Other sustainability initiatives include recycling 48% of its wastewater and implementing mitigation plans for hotels in water-stressed areas. The company has eliminated single-use plastics, introduced biodegradable packaging and has installed 343 EV charging stations across 146 locations in India. Enhancing guest experience initiatives like ‘Innergise’ green meetings offer responsible solutions for corporate gatherings.
In addition to its environmental initiatives, IHCL is committed to social responsibility by empowering local communities and fostering inclusivity. To bridge the employability gap and support deserving youth and their families, IHCL collaborates with state governments, institutions, and private organizations at 35 skill centers across 15 states and 25 cities, aiming to train 100,000 youths by 2030, having already trained 75% of its target focused on marginalized groups. Creating a broader impact IHCL’s Livelihood Support Programme in Varanasi increases entrepreneurship opportunities for women, while collaboration with UNESCO safeguards and promotes the intangible cultural heritage of India.
With a strong focus on reducing environmental impact and enhancing the well-being of the communities it serves, IHCL continues to set new benchmarks in responsible tourism.
